Thailand Weather Warning: Heavy Rain to Hit North and Northeast Through August 21

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has issued its 11th warning on the current rainy spell. It forecasts heavy to very heavy rain across northern and upper northeastern Thailand through August 21. A monsoon trough is driving the rain. The southwest monsoon is also strengthening over the Andaman Sea.

The department flagged a risk of flash floods and runoff. Foothill areas, waterways and low-lying zones face the highest risk. Residents in affected regions were told to avoid flood-prone routes. They were also told to plan travel with caution over the next two days.

Sea conditions are also rough. Waves in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand are running 2-3 metres. They can rise above 3 metres during thunderstorms. The lower Andaman Sea is seeing around 2 metres, higher in stormy conditions. Small boats have been told to stay in port in the upper Andaman and Gulf areas.
