Tourists rescued from resorts after flash floods hit Saraburi
Flash flooding trapped tourists at resorts in Kaeng Khoi and Muak Lek districts of Saraburi yesterday evening, August 30, with all those affected later rescued safely by officials and locals.
Heavy rain caused flooding in Cha-om subdistrict, Kaeng Khoi district, where water entered a resort and left tourists trapped inside. One tourist staying at the resort said floodwater rushed through the accommodation with little warning, leaving no time to move to safety.
The Saraburi Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office said it received a report of the flooding through its hotline before contacting Kaeng Khoi district officials to inspect the affected area.
Officials found tourists stranded at the flooded accommodation and helped move them from the danger area. The village headman also assisted in relocating the tourists to a safe location.
A second incident was reported in Muak Lek district, where floodwater pushed a pickup truck off a weir in the Ban Mak community, Muak Lek subdistrict.
The strong current carried the vehicle into the Muak Lek Canal, trapping three people inside. Locals and officials managed to rescue all three safely, while recovery of the pickup truck from the canal was still underway.
The Kaeng Khoi district office said personnel remained on standby for further incidents and had coordinated with subdistrict officials and village headmen to monitor the situation. Residents and others in areas near hillsides, streams and low-lying land were urged to remain alert.
ThaiRath reported last night that several flood-affected areas had returned to normal conditions. Officials were investigating each location to assess the losses.
According to the Thai Meteorological Department’s weather forecast, Thailand will experience widespread thunderstorms from 6am today until 6pm tomorrow, with heavy to very heavy rain expected in several areas, particularly the North, Northeast and East.
Bangkok and surrounding areas have a 70% chance of thunderstorms. Strong winds and rough seas are also expected along both southern coasts.
