Udon Thani resort asks Russian guest to leave after disturbance
A Russian man was removed from a resort in Udon Thani yesterday, August 23, after allegedly attacking the owner’s son and setting fire to piles of grass and rubbish outside his room.
Udon Thani’s emergency centre was notified that a Russian man, later identified as 52 year old Sergey, was reported to be behaving erratically and had attacked the resort owner’s son, who fled and sought help from the centre.
Officers from Mueang Udon Thani Police Station went to the resort and found the Russian man still appearing intoxicated and unable to communicate clearly with officers. Tourist Police were then called to assist.
The owner told police that she no longer wanted the Russian man to stay at the resort because he was concerned about the safety of others.
Tourist Police informed Sergey that the resort owner wanted him to leave the property and would not allow him to stay in the room any longer. The Russian man initially refused to leave. Officers spent some time persuading him until he eventually agreed to leave peacefully.
The resort owner, 57 year old Kai, later led police and journalists to the scene where the Russian guest reportedly set the fire.
The resort owner said her son heard the Russian man shouting and setting grass and rubbish on fire outside the property. Her son approached the foreigner to ask what he was doing but was chased and attacked.
According to the report on the Hone Krasae news programme on Channel 3, there were signs of a fire outside the resort, while the grass around the room was pulled out and piled together before being burned with rubbish.
The owner said the Russian man had regularly stayed at the resort and usually remained in Thailand for about three months at a time before travelling to Laos when his visa expired. The owner said she offered the Russian man a discounted rate because she considered him a regular customer.
The Russian man had been staying at the accommodation for about a month during his latest visit. The owner said Sergey normally stayed alone and had never caused any problems before.
The owner claimed that the Russian man’s erratic behaviour was a result of cannabis use, but police had not yet confirmed this information.
